PERIOPERATIVE NURSING VOLUNTEERS
Composed of licensed RNs, nursing students, LVNs, CNAs, Medical Assistants, scrub techs, equipment techs and runner/translators
Nursing Coordinator (Lydia S. serves in this capacity)
- Bilingual, licensed RN
- Oversees all aspects of peri-op nursing
Nursing Coordinator, alternate (Teresa M. serves in this capacity)
- Bilingual, licensed RN
- Assists Lydia S. in organizing peri-op prep on Friday
- facilitates communication with surgeons; maintains updated list of scheduled procedures
- makes rotation schedule for the staffing of all peri-op stations
- facilitates communication between host and guest surgical personnel
- facilitates communication between stations
- serves as resource nurse for all stations outside OR
Assistant to Nursing Coordinator/Timekeeper
- may be non-medical runner
- may be licensed RN interested in becoming alternate nursing coordinator
- assists coordinator in all duties as able
- keeps time to facilitate rotations between stations
- rotates as needed
Admissions
Admissions medical personnel (Yolanda A. serves in this capacity)
- bilingual RN
- collects patient data (vital signs, weight, transportation information, NPO status…)
- reviews patient chart to ensure it is complete
- labs, signed consent, transportation information, patient data…)
- Provides patient/family support in admissions area
- rotates to other stations as needed
Admissions assistant
- may be RN, nursing student, LVN, CNA or medical assistant
- assists in all admissions activities listed above
- transports patient and chart to pre-op area
- rotates to other stations as needed
Pre-operative Holding Area
Pre-op medical personnel
- bilingual, preferred
- may be RN, nursing student, LVN, CNA or medical assistant
- reviews patient chart (labs, signed consent, patient data…)
- Provides patient/family support in pre-op area
- assists patient with bathing/changing
- keeps food/drink out of room
- keeps patients relaxed/entertained
- reminds patient to use restroom before transport to OR
- rotates to other stations as needed
Pre-op assistant
- may be non-medical
- assists in all patient/family support activities listed above
- rotates to other stations as needed
Operative Room
OR circulating nurse (Lydia S. serves in this capacity)
- responsible for running equipment/tools from carts to surgical team
- communicates surgical team needs to runners/equipment techs
- does not rotate to other peri-op stations
scrub, instrument tech (Conrado P. serves in this capacity)
- may be licensed RN or experienced scrub tech
- scrubs in to assist surgeons
- does not rotate to other peri-op stations
assistant OR circulator
- may be licensed RN, or nursing student
- reports to circulating RN
- may rotate to other peri-op stations as needed
equipment tech (Kelvin Y. serves in this capacity)
- may be non-medical
- cleans, sets up and maintains sterilization equipment
- reports to circulating RN
- sterilizes surgical tools as directed by surgical team
- may rotate to runner position as needed
1 equipment tech assistant
- assists and relieves equipment tech
- ensures that sterilization equipment is cleaned and loaded onto truck
- may rotate to runner position as needed
2 Runner/translator
- may be non-medical
- stationed outside OR area
- reports to nursing coordinator
- communicates OR needs/status
- transports patients/equipment to and from OR area
Post-Anesthesia Care Unit
Recovery RN
- licensed RN
- prepares PACU to receive patients from OR
- documents MD orders (meds, d/c IV, follow-up care, etc…)
- monitors and documents patient status (V.S., surgical site, activity, etc…)
- reports patient status change to anesthesiologist/surgeon
- gives report during hand-off to post-op
- rotates to other stations as needed
Recovery Partner
- student nurse in RN program or New Grad RN
- carries out patient recovery duties under the supervision of licensed RN
- rotates to other stations as needed
Post-Operative Care Station
Educator (Monica S. serves in this capacity)
- ensures that home meds are distributed accordingly; MD orders verified by licensed RN
- post-procedure patient/family education (meds, follow-up care…); signed off by licensed RN
- serves as runner/translator as needed
Post-op RN
- receives patient, chart and report from PACU
- reviews chart, documents MD orders (meds, d/c IV, follow-up care, etc…)
- monitors and documents patient status (V.S., surgical site, activity, etc…)
- reports patient status change to anesthesiologist/surgeon
- educates patient/family as needed
- discharges patient when appropriate criteria is met
- rotates to other stations as needed
