Supply Carts

Friday - Preparation of supplies and equipment for surgery

  • OR Carts*
    • 1. Remove Carts and supply storage containers from the truck. There are three large carts, covered with blue covers.
    • 2. Park the carts in the warehouse and open all of them.
    • 3. Instruments will need to be sorted by type. Until the sterile processing room is built, this will be accomplished by setting up long tables, covering them with sterilization wrappers and clean towels, and sorting and processing instruments there.
    • 4. Instruments in sets are marked with colored tape. Each group will be placed in a sterilization container and prepared for sterilization.
    • 5. At least one of each type of instrument should be peel packed for sterilization.
    • 6. If sterile towels are needed to stock the cart, they will have to be folded and prepared for sterilization.
    • 7. Once the instruments and towels have been prepared for sterilization, the next task is pulling supplies for the surgery cases the next day. One set of supplies should be pulled in put in a bag for each surgery scheduled for Saturday. Ear tubes is an exception as they use minimal supplies. If the number of surgeries is not certain, pull eight sets of supplies. Pull supplies from the carts first – to use up stock and keep it from expiring, then pull from the supply warehouse. (see step #9)
    • 8. Once the supplies are pulled for surgeries, it is necessary to restock the carts. Stock the carts according to the inventory sheets.
    • 9. Only one person should retrieve supplies from the warehouse. All supplies pulled should be listed with their bin #, description and amount. This list should be turned in to Bob Chalfa at the end of the day.
    • 10. Once the carts are fully stocked, they should be zipped back into their covers and the covers cleaned off thoroughly. They are then placed back on the truck to be transported to the hospital the next day.

Saturday – OR carts in the surgery area

    • 1. Before the OR carts are unloaded from the truck, an area in the hallway between the ORs should be cleared.
    • 2. In front of the entrance to the surgery area, a sheet should be laid down and disinfectant poured liberally over it. As the carts are rolled over the sheet, into the surgery area, it cleans their wheels.
    • 3. Carts should be parked, uncovered and opened.
    • 4. Supplies for the sterilizers should be placed in the decontamination room in the back. Each OR should be supplied with trash sacks, a Sweet box (named for Commander Tom Sweet), and exam gloves. Hand scrub and Avagard should be set out by the scrub sinks.
    • 5. As surgeries progress, each OR will require supplies and equipment from the carts. One person should be in charge of facilitating this flow. This person will also keep track of any supplies that need replenishing or instruments that need flashing and facilitate that as well.
    • 6. At the end of the day, Sweet boxes and unused, unopened supplies should be returned to the carts. The carts should then be zipped up and moved to the truck for transport.
    • 7. A thorough sweet of the OR area is made to remove any remaning Thousand Smiles property. The area should be returned to the hospital's standard condition.
